Mathematical practice blog
Upon doing this exercise, I have expanded my knowledge about teaching mathematics. As a teacher it is important to follow the guidelines so that students complete all of the necessary requirements. MP 1 is "make sense of problems and persevere in solving them." The content that I read about in the PLC articles is nothing new, for I have already had an understanding of it. I never knew that there was a specific name for the information until completing the assignment. I believe that my partner and I did a great job on this project. Our infographic explains the importance of analyzing math problems and making sure they understand the information rather than getting the right answer. It is beneficial for students to make connections from real-world situations so that they can improve their educational knowledge.
After watching the 8 SMP videos, I have been able to better my own knowledge as a future teacher. The second mathematical practice (MP) focuses on the reasoning abstractly and quantitatively. By this, it is important for students to realize that numbers are all around them so that they can make connections in mathematics. The third MP is to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. This standard appears to focus on collaborative efforts, for the best way to learn is from their peers. The fourth MP is modeling. It has to deal with visuals and making sure that they go along with the problem. The fifth MP is to use appropriate tools strategically. This goes along with representing for manipulative purposes. The sixth practice it to attend to precision through communicative purposes. By this the purpose of building vocabulary is important. The seventh focuses of making use of structure and realizing that there are multiple ways to get an answer. The last mathematical practice is to provide many examples and repeatively build onto the concepts that are taught.
The 5 NCTM Process Standards are problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation. All of the which are self explanatory and can relate to the mathematical practices accordingly. The standards and practices work as a tool to guide teachers to provide the best learning experiences for the students in the classroom. Math can be very difficult for students to learn. It is important for teachers to know how to teach properly so that the students can have the best learning experience.
Nice reflection, Kirsten! Thanks:)
