In the 'Measuring Penny' article, the author discusses the importance of tying in literature when it comes to teaching mathematical concepts. Children typically start open pages to a book and making inferences based on the pictures at a young age. Regardless of whether or not they can read the words, the students can begin to tell their own story based on the images throughout the story. Not only does this help develop a child's comprehension skills, but it can also guide students to engage in prior knowledge when it comes to teaching mathematics. If students feel that the story is based on real-life experiences, they are more motivated to learn the concept that is being taught.     The article begins by telling us how a class of kinder-gardeners had a difficult time measuring length. They were given multiple objects, such as paper clips and toothpicks, and asked to use them as tools for measurement. At first, the students were not understanding the concep...

Mathematical Apps

iXL-  https://www.ixl.com/?partner=google&campaign=6515648543&adGroup=81050280231&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6bGK5tLe6wIVE77ACh0VeQAxEAAYAyAAEgJ_sfD_BwE     The first app that I am going to discuss is called, iXL. This app is essentially used for all ages, however I think it is best for younger grade levels because it is more practice based, rather than assessment. iXL allows its users to practice a variety of grade-level skills. It is divided up by grade level and then categorized by mathematical topic. Students can use this app during independent study time in the classroom, for teachers can direct the students to practice a certain skill when necessary. The downside of this app is that it does not track the students progress, therefore the teacher never knows if the student is succeeding or not, unless they are sitting right next to them. Mathematical practice blog

Upon doing this exercise, I have expanded my knowledge about teaching mathematics. As a teacher it is important to follow the guidelines so that students complete all of the necessary requirements. MP 1 is "m ake sense of problems and persevere in solving them." The content that I read about in the PLC articles is nothing new, for I have already had an understanding of it. I never knew that there was a specific name for the information until completing the assignment. I believe that my partner and I did a great job on this project. Our infographic explains the importance of analyzing math problems and making sure they understand the information rather than getting the right answer. It is beneficial for students to make connections from real-world situations so that they can improve their educational knowledge.                After watching the 8 SMP videos, I have been able to bette...
